Every fantasy reader has been burned by magic that does whatever the plot needs. Carthage doesn't work like that.
In this episode: the eight Iron Laws — the immutable rules every spell, rite, and miracle in The Carthage Cycle obeys. Why all power is a loan from the gods. Why every working has a price, and why the price is rarely coin. What blood actually buys, what it costs the soul, and why the sky over Carthage is not scenery — it's a scoreboard.
Seven minutes. Eight laws. Check the receipts.
THE JACKAL OF CARTHAGE launches Friday, August 28th, under the full moon — free on Kindle Unlimited. The series runs one book per full moon until it's done.

— Why most fantasy magic cheats (and Carthage doesn't)
SPEAKER_00Every fantasy reader has been burned the same way, magic that does whatever the plot needs. Carthage does not work that way. In this world, magic is a market, and markets have laws. Prices, invisible hands, laws and rules to be obeyed. Tonight, the eight of them, read plainly, so that when the events of Carthage break your heart, you will be able to check the receipts. Nightforge after dark. Epic Worlds, dangerous desire. Mind the dark. This is a story for adults. Violence, sexual fantasies, blood rights, and worse, listener discretion. The eight laws.
— Law 1: No Favor, No Power — the four doors of magic: blood, rite, devotion, sacred object
SPEAKER_00They are called the Iron Laws. Not because iron is strong, because iron is honest, it does not bend for kings, and it does not bend for gods, and it will not bend for you. Law one No favor, no power. There is no magic in this world that belongs to a person. All of it, every healed wound, every true dream, every fire that answers, is divine favour on loan, channelled through one of exactly four doors blood, right, devotion, or a sacred object. If someone in these books works a wonder, one of those four doors is
— Law 2: Everything Costs — what a price really is in this world
SPEAKER_00open somewhere. Find the door, and you have found what they paid at it. Law 2 Everything costs. There are no exceptions to this one, not for priests, not for kings, not for the pure of heart, least of all for the pure of heart, because purity is itself a payment made daily. Plainly, a price in this world is not always coin. It can be blood, it can be years, it can be a vow that now owns you, a name you can never use again, a person you had to let go of. When magic happens in Carthage and you cannot see the price, you are not watching a gift, you are watching a debt being written, and somewhere a collector has already been assigned.
— Law 3: Sacrilege Breeds Curse and Plague — why armies fear a looted temple
SPEAKER_00Law three Sacrilege breeds curse and plague. The gods keep books and desecration is theft from those books. Rob a temple, mock a rite, spill blood on holy ground, and the account does not merely go unpaid, it turns. Curse for the thief, plague for the city that sheltered him. This is why armies in this world fear a looted sanctuary more than a lost battle. A battle costs men, sacrilege costs everyone. Law four Moloch's power corrupts
— Law 4: Moloch's Power Corrupts the Soul — what blood sacrifice buys, and its hidden cost
SPEAKER_00the soul. The firepath is real, and it works. Blood buys power, and the price scales with the preciousness of what burns. A bull buys little, a captive more, a beloved child, a miracle. But every right hardens the soul of the one who pays by one degree, and here is the terrible part. The degree cannot be felt. No one ever notices themselves becoming a monster. That is not a flaw in the fire. That is the fire's whole design. The shortcut is always available and always whispering. Law five. Tanit's mystery kills the profane. The moon path is slower, deeper,
— Law 5: Tanit's Mystery Kills the Profane — the door with no lock
SPEAKER_00healing, veiling, prophecy, water and blood, but her power is not open to the unclean or the unsworn. Approach her mysteries profane, and they do not refuse you. They end you. Her door has no lock and needs none. The threshold itself is the test. Law six The veil binds its holder. Somewhere in the temple of Tanit hangs the Xymph, the goddess's essence made cloth. Whoever
— Law 6: The Veil Binds Its Holder — the zaïmph, and why untouchable isn't free
SPEAKER_00holds it is sacrosanct, untouchable by mortal hand. It sounds like the greatest prize in the world. Listen to the wording of the law, the veil binds its holder. Untouchable is not the same as free. What it gives you is a loan, and the safety is only the interest, and the principle grows for every hour you hold it. Law seven Blood debts compound with interest. A debt written in blood does not sit quietly, it grows. Kill a man and you owe. Wait a year and you owe more, wait a generation, and your children owe. This is why feuds in this world never simply end,
— Law 7: Blood-Debts Compound with Interest — why feuds never end
SPEAKER_00and why the wise settle their accounts early at the stated price in front of witnesses. The alternative is paying later, at a price nobody stated. Law eight. The sun moon balance moves with mortal deeds. The last law is the largest. The sky itself keeps a running account. Every act of devotion, every sacrilege, every child through the fire and every oath kept in the dark, all of it tips the balance between
— Law 8: The Sun-Moon Balance — the sky as scoreboard
SPEAKER_00the sun and the moon, between the fire that is owed and the moon that keeps her own. The gods are not watching the war from outside, the war is moving them, which means the sky over Carthage is not scenery. It is a scoreboard, and both sides can read it. Those are the eight. Notice what they have in common. Nothing is free, nothing is vague, and somewhere in every working there is a collector.
